Texas Fiber Mill operates within three distinct and related missions. As a processing mill our mission is to aid fiber farm families to add value to their home-grown fiber in a timely manner with consistent and recognizable quality at all stages of processing. As a producer our mission is to blend and spin artisan yarns for fiber artists that have consistent and recognizable style and quality. And finally, as a member of a larger community our mission is to participate in and promote sustainable agriculture and act as a resource to small farms that are raising fiber producing animals. More details about the first two parts of our mission can be found on the services and products pages by following the links on this page. The third part of our mission statement we accomplish in a variety of ways at different geographic levels.
On the very local level, Texas Fiber Mill serves as the meeting place for the Blue Earth Guild, a gathering of fiber artists and enthusiasts, many of whom raise fiber producing animals. On a statewide level, Texas Fiber Mill participates in the Go Texan program of the Texas Department of Agriculture participating with other Texas agricultural producers in developing branding for a state identity. Texas Fiber Mill believes in buying locally and thinking globally. On the national level, Texas Fiber Mill owners, Deborah and Jim Sharp participate in a number of breed clubs for fiber animals including the Colored Angora Goat Breeder's Association, Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association and National Angora Rabbit Breeders Association. Deborah is also a member of The National Needlearts Association (TNNA) and The Knitting Guild of America (TKGA). Finally, Texas Fiber Mill is part of the larger world community by committing 10% of their net profits to Heifer International, a non-profit organization that aids impoverished families worldwide to become more self-reliant through the gift of livestock and training in their care and then completes the circle of giving by requiring that each recipient family give the first female offspring born on their farm to a neighbor. By operating within a supportive network Texas Fiber Mill operates from a philosophy of abundance rather than scarcity and is ready to both give and receive through our business.
Also as part of the world community Texas Fiber Mill uses a rain water collection system and recycles 40% of the water used during the scouring process. By using an ecologically healthful scouring agent, Ecoscour, Texas Fiber Mill is able to use the outflow grey water system from the scouring process to irrigate the hay pasture which feeds our own flock of 75 colored angora goats producing mohair that ultimately returns to the mill for blending into designer luxury yarns. Texas Fiber Mill also employs local residents and offers the opportunity for local artists and artisans to not only purchase high quality fiber and yarns but also to rent time on a felting machine to create their own felted products. Texas Fiber Mill is here for you and here to stay.
